Gotham City has been portrayed a few different ways. One of the earliest portrayals was in Batman (1966), which was really just a section of St. Louis on lucite.

Later Portrayals have Gotham City in New Jersey, positioned across from Metropolis in Delaware. This has pretty much stayed the case ever since, but with Gotham’s position and shape varied over time. I think it works for narrative purposes.

Somewhere between it all, smushed together and twisted this way and that, an actual “Gotham City” can be mapped out.

In the meantime, several have attempted to make sense of it.
